Here's Why I Prefer Text (sms) Over Voice Calls and Voice Mail
If possible, send a text. It's better.
Can't hear phone due to high background noise such as garbage trucks, saws, nail guns, lawn mowers or leaf blowers.
Using ear plugs due to above.
Can't hear caller due high background noise such as sirens, traffic and other people talking.
Can't use phone due to risk of being destroyed. Smartphones are too expensive to drop into paint or off a ladder.
Painting in areas with poor signal (eg. basements)
Mobile callers call with poor signal.
Often can't take notes due to working with both hands.
Maybe near border and getting bogus roaming charges.
b, c, d, e, g, p and z sound alike.
My hearing is less than good.
Maybe driving. Haven't gotten hands free yet.
Sometimes driving and eating lunch.
Spray painting with mask on.
Busy talking to customers in person.
Away from phone while it's charging.
Listening to loud music.
Often need full attention on task especially on roof tops.
Sometimes too heat exhausted or dehydrated to talk after 400 times up and down a 24ft ladder in the sun at +30C for 10 hours.
Callers attention is divided due to driving, kids, or other.
Solicitors, surveys and job seekers often call making it less worthy to answer or check the
Most likely a call is going to interrupt a task.
Calls use more time than email/text.
I've observed callers often have written skills that are better than verbal.
Not everyone is articulate or with good verbal communication skills.
Text messages use less smartphone battery power.
Some people expatiate.
Some callers stretch out a call with "end call anxiety". It's the fear the one is unable to call again for more questions or detail.
Some callers use speaker phones with too much background noise and reverberation.
Callers sometimes lack a plan or don't know what they want. Writing text gives one a chance to think.
Some callers are checking if their regular painter overcharged
for a job.
Sometimes I don't have a pad and pen to take notes during a call.
Better spam control with sms.
Texted addresses are easily copied to GPS apps.
Your agreements by text are considered legal evidence.
Can't phone someone at 2am but you can text!
Sometimes paper notes get lost.
Voice mail sucks. It uses too much time. I need to listen many
times to take notes. The automation is slow. 'You have 3 new messages, 2 skipped messages and 4 saved messages. To review your messages press 1. First new message
sent today at 6:32 pm from 6..0..4..3...0...8...6..4..7..3 ...' And then a 5 minute poorly recorded message by someone driving with their windows open.
Ok to flood with lots of pictures. I think the email size is unlimited unlike hotmail or other.
Please call if no email response. The spam filters are strong with this one.
Email replies are by email unless you explicitly ask for a phone reply.
I do my best to answer quickly. Response often within 24hr if not away on vacation.
Try phoning if after 24hr.
Uploaded every 10 minutes by desktop. Email checked by cellular data when signal available.
See email examples below.
I write short blunt messages.
Address may change if spammed too much.
Only Phone is Cell Phone
Free calling across Canada.
If battery dead or phone no working, you might get a "number not in service" response.
Cell signal sometimes drops out at home.
Expect TTS automation if I text your landline.
See article below on why it's sometimes difficult to talk on the phone.
Only area codes 250, 604 and 778 answered.
Caller ID spoof(eg. no area code), blocked ID(*67) or 1-prefix go to vmail.
Maybe faster response by calling.
Maybe roaming or without signal.
I try to keep conversations short.
If tolled using landline (eg. Mission) dial 1-, message instead.
I end calls for solicitors of internet services.
Vmail response often within 48hr during busy times. If no response, try other ways.
Only stores 3 emails. Text preferred over voicemail.
Texts are replied by text unless you request otherwise.
Chat from Desktop
I can run Google Hangouts by request.
