Why It Can be Difficult to Talk on the Phone.
Can't hear phone due to high background noise such as garbage trucks, saws, nail guns, lawn mowers or leaf blowers.
Using ear plugs due to above.
Can't hear caller due high background noise such as sirens, traffic and other people talking.
Can't use phone due to risk of being destroyed. Smartphones are too expensive to drop into paint or off a ladder.
Painting in areas with poor signal (eg. basements)
Mobile callers call with poor signal.
Often can't take notes due to using both hands.
Maybe near border and getting bogus roaming charges.
b, c, d, e, g, p and z sound alike.
My hearing is less than good.
Driving. Haven't gotten hands free yet.
Sometimes driving and eating lunch.
Spray painting with mask on.
Busy talking to customers in person.
Away from phone while it's charging.
Listening to mp3 from mp3 device not from smartphone.
Often need full attention on task especially on roof tops.
Sometimes too heat exhausted to talk after 400 times up and down a 24ft ladder in the sun at +30C for 10 hours.
Callers attention is divided due to driving, kids, or other.
Solicitors, surveys and job seekers often call making it less worthy to answer or check the
It's a bit unfair that a caller can wait for an opportunity to make a call but a callee often can't wait for an opportunity to accept a call. Perhaps someday I'll have a call center with 30
imo, calls use more time than email/text.
I've observed callers often have written skills that are better than verbal.
Not everyone is articulate or with good verbal communication skills.
I'm unsure of the risks of microwave radiation near my brain. I only use cell.
Some people expatiate.
Some callers stretch out a call with "end call anxiety". It's the fear the one is unable to call again for more questions or detail.
Some callers use speaker phones with too much background noise and reverberation.
Some callers are blowing off steam, seek
free consolation and don't
intend to hire a painter. Stressed caller, "This guy I hired said he is a painter and can't be contacted to finish the job." Angry
caller, "Why is everybody so expensive! How much do you charge?" Frustrated DIY painter, "How come I see roller patterns and lines on
all the walls!" Being used as a "dial a therapist" is awkward and rude and makes it less worthy to answer the phone.
Callers sometimes lack a plan or don't know what they want. Writing text gives one a chance to think.
Some callers are checking if their regular painter overcharged
for a job.
Phone providers charge more for voice than written messages.
Sometimes I don't have a pad and pen to take notes during a call.
Can't phone someone at 2am but you can text!
Sometimes paper notes get lost.
Voice mail takes too long to check and I need to listen many
times to take notes.
